Synod’s Moderator: Dr. Dennis Prutow, Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary

Synod’s Theme: The Mission of the Church. Daily devotional speakers on this theme were Pastor Keith Magill, retiring moderator; Pastor John D. Edgar, Home Mission Board; Pastor Wade Mann, Church Revitalization Committee; Dr. John Carson, Associate Reformed Presbyterian fraternal delegate; and Pastor David Hanson, Foreign Mission Board. Directory for Worship: Chapters 2 and 3 (on the practice of worship and baptism and the Lord’s supper) were adopted by the Synod. The final two chapters will likely be proposed for approval next year.

Psalter Revision: The new psalter will be titled, The Book of Psalms for Worship and will be about the same size as the current Book of Psalms for Singing (over 400 selections). Synod recommended to the committee a final 30-day review period by Synod delegates, which is now completed.

Presbyteries: Membership in the RPCNA grew by 126 members to a total of 6,579; the number of congregations grew by 2 to a total of 79. Several presbyteries reported a significant need for pastors.

Foreign Missions: Synod approved a name change for the Foreign Mission Board to RP Global Missions. The board oversees work in Japan, Sudan, and elsewhere. Over 100 people participated in short-term missions in the past year.

Home Missions: The board reports about 10 current church plants and outreach centers. Over $100,000 in aid was sent to church plants and new churches last year. The Resident In Training program has proven effective thus far in training church planters and strengthening the churches.

Justification Study Committee: By a unanimous vote the Synod declared solidarity with Reformed brethren in rejecting the “New Perspectives on Paul” and “The Federal Vision.” The delegates reaffirmed their commitment to the biblical, historical, and confessional doctrine of justification. The Synod recommended the study reports on the matter of the PCA, OPC, RCUS, and Mid-America Reformed Seminary for use within its churches.

Geneva College: President Kenneth A. Smith addressed the Synod, and Ralph Joseph of the Board of Corporators addressed current discussions about restructuring Geneva’s oversight boards.

Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary: President Jerry O’Neill announced the hiring of Dr. George Scipione to set up a Biblical Counseling Institute in a building that was purchased near the seminary.
