In the early years of the Witness, it was published weekly, and correspondents reported many small events in their congregations. Here are some news reports from November issues 90 years ago.
November 7
Hebron (Idana, Kan.) RPC
Beth Copeland spent a few days last week visiting in the James Copeland home.
The congregational prayer meeting was held in the church basement, Wednesday afternoon, last week.
Services will begin at 11 o’clock next Sabbath morning and will continue at that hour through the winter.
Mrs. Sam Tippin was quite poorly part of last week, but is some better at this writing.
Fresno, Calif., RPC
Our parsonage is making quite a showing. The addition of a study and three bedrooms are up, almost ready for plastering, and the roof is on. The outside will be stuccoed. The work is all donated except a carpenter to direct, and he is there but a part of the time. Mr. Cal Connery has been a faithful helper. He has gone to Southern California for a visit. The ladies have been furnishing the dinners.
The attendance in the Bible School, Preaching Service and C. Y. P. U. is showing a marked increase due to the efforts of a Contest Committee in the Bible School. There are two sides, Red and Blue. The Reds lead so far.
A good time was reported by the young people who attended a wiener roast on the river.
Mrs. Kent and children visited a few days in Santa Cruz. Calvin is home over the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. Rodger Hodges from San Jose worshiped with us last Sabbath.
Mr. and Mrs. Ira McCarter and Mrs. M. E. McCarter were in Santa Ana last week.
November 14
Pittsburgh Presbytery
The fall meeting of Pittsburgh Presbytery was held in the Allegheny [Pittsburgh, Pa.] Church, Oct. 28, 1934. Rev. Paul D. McCracken was named moderator pro tem inasmuch as moderator Rev. S. E. Boyle and wife were far out upon the Pacific Ocean en-route to China.
Rev. R. C. Fullerton, Secretary of Young People’s Work, reported that plans were well underway for Post-Winona “Get-Togethers,” and for a “Best-Yet” summer camp in 1935.
Licentiate Kermit Edgar gave a most enheartening word as to his Eastvale [Pa.] Mission Station Work. Elder M. F. Murphy supplemented the above word in a similarly cheerful vein. Elder Murphy is superintendent of the Sabbath school in said place and has but just recently been ordained to the eldership in the Geneva [Beaver Falls, Pa.] Congregation.
Second, New York, N.Y., RPC
The Second Church enjoyed its communion season the third week of October under favorable outward conditions. The Rev. C. A. Dodds of Pittsburgh was the communion assistant. He brought thoughtful and penetrating messages from the Word. The attendance was good, though the absence of elder Wishart on account of serious illness was greatly regretted.
November 21
The sacrament of the Lord’s supper was enjoyed by the Southfield [Mich.] congregation October 28. There were two accessions, Margaret Ann and Robert Andrew Henning. Our pastor and Rev. Paul D. McCracken of Rose Point, Pa., exchanged assistance for the communion services. Mr. McCracken’s presence with us was greatly enjoyed by everyone, and his preaching of the Word, in demonstration of the Spirit and power, made the communion service unusually helpful and enjoyable.
The following members of the Cincinnati [Ohio] Congregation have undergone serious operations in the past few months: Miss Jane Lemker, Mrs. Keagy, Miss Zella Smith, and Dr. Crawford Elsey. We are happy to report they are all recovering nicely.
Word has just been received by the Witness that Rev. H. G. Foster, pastor of the Bellefontaine, Ohio, congregation, underwent a critical operation in the Bellefontaine Hospital on Nov. 9. The operation was apparently successful and he was reported as getting along favorably. The Church will join with the prayers of loved ones for his recovery and restoration.
Mrs. A. A. Wylie writes: “Miss Irene Piper of our congregation [Oakdale, Ill.] is going to Cyprus for work in Nicosia very soon. We are glad to have such a fine young woman to share in the work. Her going will be a blessing to our congregation as well as to the work in Cyrus.”
