Selfishness—The Bridge to Nowhere

A Page for Kids

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, had a bridge that was supposed to go to the North Side from downtown. But for years it extended halfway over the Allegheny River, unfinished. It was called “The Bridge to Nowhere.”

Selfishness is like a bridge to nowhere. It makes false promises of “more for me,” no matter what the issue. It takes from or excludes others. That selfish person ends up all alone. Family, friends, and strangers do not want to be around that person.

God loves us too much to leave us to our selfish desires, so He gave us the ten commandments. They lay the foundation for our lives in relationship to Him and to each other. These commands are summed up in Mark 12:33 : “And to love Him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as himself, is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

There is no fear in love, but rather there is total trust one for another. When I truly love my Creator God and my neighbor, I’m connecting with them.

Think of some examples of selfishness. How do you deal with the selfishness of others? Of yourself?
