Memory Verse

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. —2 Timothy 3:16

Did you know the most important part of the public worship service should be the reading, preaching, and hearing of the Word of God? This message from the Bible will be applied to our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

The reading of the Word of God by the minister, or with the congregation taking some part, should be thought of as hearing God’s message to us.

Why is the Bible so important to us as Christians? The Bible, both Old and New Testaments, was written by men directed by the Spirit of God. It is the written Word of God and is our authority, or basis for our faith and life in Christ. The Bible ultimately answers every question of life.

We do not have the right to set up another or a lower standard than what the Bible commands. We are “Bible-believing Christians” first, last and always! The Bible is a priceless treasure we have inherited from the past.

The Bible is the Word of God. It is not like any other book because God is the author. We say the Bible is inspired. “Inspiration” means that the words as they were given by God and written down by men who were inspired by His Holy Spirit are the very words of God. Inspired also means “God-breathed.” “Men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Pet. 1:21).

What we believe about the Bible is very important. If we believe it is true and the only authority from God, we will give it a special place in our everyday lives. If we don’t, we won’t care whether we read and obey it. It is our only source for learning about God Himself and His Son, Jesus Christ. Perhaps remembering that it is God’s Holy Word will help us to sit quietly and listen carefully as it is read in public worship.

Think About It

  1. Review the Westminster Shorter Catechism questions 2 and 3 with one of your parents and discuss their meaning.

  2. Read 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and Psalm 19:7. What do these two verses say about the Scriptures?

  3. Can you give the meaning of the word “inspiration”? Give a verse of Scripture to support your answer.
