The 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade is nothing to celebrate

   | Columns, Learn & Live | January 31, 2013

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade. On Jan. 22, 1973, the court legalized abortion in America. Since that fateful decision, through 2011, there have been over 54 million abortions in the United States. Over 54 million babies did not see the light of day but were “terminated” in their mother’s wombs. The mutilated little bodies of over 54 million of our fellow citizens have been “discreetly” disposed of as unwanted, diseased body parts. As a result, the current U.S. population of just over 311 million has been reduced by 15 percent. The blood of over 54 million tiny human beings, each bearing God’s image, is on the hands of doctors and nurses carrying out these heinous acts.

Not only so, we bear collective responsibility. Planned Parenthood received a record 542 million in taxpayer dollars from the federal government in the 2012 fiscal year. Tax dollars subsidize this holocaust—my tax dollars and yours. Think about it. Planned Parenthood reported more than 334,000 abortions for 2011, a record. In addition, the organization previously reported over 329,000 abortions in 2010 and over 332,000 abortions in 2009, almost one million abortions in a three-year period. At least in part, this carnage represents your tax dollars at work. This wanton destruction of human life is an American holocaust.

God does not smile upon this holocaust. God spoke to ancient Israel in no uncertain terms. “Moreover, you took your sons and daughters whom you had borne to Me and sacrificed them to idols to be devoured. Were your harlotries so small a matter? You slaughtered My children and offered them up to idols by causing them to pass through the fire…‘Woe, woe to you!’ declares the Lord God” (Ezek. 16:20-23). Why did God judge Israel and reduce Judah to rubble? “I pronounced them unclean because of their gifts, in that they caused all their firstborn to pass through the fire so that I might make them desolate, in order that they might know that I am the Lord” (20:26-27).

God judged the nation for the sin of sacrificing their children on the altars of self-service and self-indulgence. “For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands. Thus they have committed adultery with their idols and even caused their sons, whom they bore to Me, to pass through the fire to them as food…For when they had slaughtered their children for their idols, they entered My sanctuary on the same day to profane it; and lo, thus they did within My house” (Ezek. 23:37-40).

Are our sins less heinous than the sins of God’s ancient people?

Wake up, America! Insurance policies once recognized winds and floods and storms as acts of God. Hurricanes still assail us, but we no longer believe they are acts of God. We no longer believe they can reveal God’s judgment. We have been embroiled in war for over a decade. America has engaged in just wars. But we no longer believe that war can be a sign or token of God’s judgment.

“Behold, I am about to punish them! The young men will die by the sword, their sons and daughters will die by famine” (Jer. 11:22). “Therefore, thus says the Lord God, ‘I will make a violent wind break out in My wrath. There will also be in My anger a flooding rain and hailstones to consume in wrath’” (Ezek. 13:13).

God frowns on us for sacrificing our children to abortionists’ knives. Wake up, America!
