History

Springs Reformed Church (RPCNA)was started as a church planting effort of the Westminster RPC in Denver, Colo., in 1980. It was known originally as Colorado Springs Reformed Presbyterian Fellowship. That year the commission overseeing the church plant called Bruce Backensto to be the church’s first pastor.

Meetings for the first three years were held in the home of Bob and Ruth Mann, and then moved to a remodeled five-car garage on the property of Bob Wager, one of the founding church members. This converted garage served as the church’s meeting place for about 10 years and was able to seat around 50 people. In 1986, Pastor Paul McCracken was called to fill the pulpit. In 1992, the present church building at 229 S. Weber was purchased and remodeled to accommodate about 120 people. In 2004, Pastor McCracken retired from his duties, and David Reese was ordained and installed as pastor. A recent remodeling project on the church building has enlarged it to accommodate around 250 people.

What Has Never Been Told

There are four families in the congregation in which three or more generations worship together: the Mann, Romine, Chaney, and Stickel families. Colorado Springs has a strong military presence here with Fort Carson, Peterson and Shriever Air Force bases, and the U.S. Air Force Academy. Several military officers and enlisted men are members, including an Army surgeon, an Army medic and Ranger, and one who is currently serving in Iraq. One of the ruling elders is working in a foreign country as a linguist; he is home only one year in five to serve on the session. One member, Shane Sapp, is currently enrolled at the RP Seminary as a theological student working toward his M.Div.

Current Ministries

There are two small groups that meet each week for prayer, two monthly ladies’ study groups, a monthly men’s prayer breakfast, and a monthly college-age group meeting. Due to the downtown location, there are regular opportunities to minister in various ways to those who come to the doors looking for help, including by offering food and clothing, helping pay for medical needs, and helping with housing expenses. In ministering to these needs, there is the opportunity to share Christ with these folks and invite them to worship with the congregation, which several have done over the years.

Prayer Requests

1) That God will continue to bless the preaching of the Word and make it effectual in the lives of the congregation to sanctify their hearts and to motivate their Christian service.

2) That, if it is God’s will, this congregation would be able to daughter another church in the Colorado Springs area in the coming years.

3) That God would continue to add to their numbers, both with new births in the families and also in His bringing His elect from the community and beyond.

4) That God would use the building’s location in downtown Colorado Springs as a means to have a greater impact for the gospel to this city, and that He would be glorified in the lives of the members and adherents.
