In Memoriam: Doris Jean Mitchell

   | | May 13, 2002

Doris Jean Mitchell, a member of the Rose Point Reformed Presbyterian Church, died on February 26, 2002. She was born Sept. 7, 1930, in Marion Center, Pa., the daughter of Walter and Martha Neal Black.

She was a 1947 graduate of Marion Center High School. She received her bachelor’s degree from Indiana State Teachers College (now Indiana University of Pennsylvania), her master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and her Ph.D. in mathematics from Pennsylvania State University in 1972.

Jean was a member of the faculty at Geneva College from 1954 to 1960. It was there she met John M. Mitchell, whom she married on June 14, 1958. She taught part-time in the math department at Westminster College from 1970 to 1985.

Jean was a member of the Geneva (Beaver Falls, Pa.) RPC for many years before transferring to Rose Point. She faithfully attended church services, was an active member of the WMF and a willing devotional leader. She also had served as presbyterial treasurer and as a director of the Reformed Presbyterian Home. Whatever she undertook she did well. Jean was very supportive of John’s involvement in local and denominational activities. With the loss of Jean, the church lost one of its finest examples of faithfulness, scholarship, integrity, patience, and willingness to serve.

Surviving are her husband; a son, John E. of West Chester, Pa.; a daughter, Ruth Garcia and her husband Hilton, of Mechanicsville, Md.; four grandchildren; and two brothers and a sister. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

A memorial service was held at the Rose Point Church conducted by Pastor Robert Schmidtberger, assisted by Dr. Willard McMillan and Rev. Jerry O’Neill. Interment was in Gilgal Cemetery, Indiana County, Pa.

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints” (Ps. 116:15).
