At the end of Genesis, the sons of Israel are in Egypt and Joseph dies. At the beginning of Exodus, the sons of Israel “increased greatly” (Exod. 1:7). A new king arose over Egypt “who did not know Joseph” (v. 8). Slavery followed. “They set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens” (v. 11).

In three major sections, the Book of Exodus tells the story of Israel’s redemption and organization into a covenant, worshiping community.

The first section, chapters 1-18, tells the story of God’s redemption of Israel under the leadership of Moses. Integral to Israel’s redemption is the Passover.

It is the Lord’s Passover. For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord.
