Around the Church September 2020

Rose Point (New Castle, Pa.)

Charles Brown, pastor

Dora, Charlie, and Peter Brown were part of a small choir through their homeschool group in December, and Charlie and Peter participated in the Pinewood Derby sponsored by Trail Life in February. Peter came home with a second-place ribbon for design. Dora and Annie Brown memorized and then performed portions of Shakespearean plays on the stage of the O’Reilly Theater in Pittsburgh, Pa. Nolan Curran was promoted to captain in the Civil Air Patrol in January and swing manager at an Ellwood City fast food restaurant in February.

The Savvy Saturday program began with Knitting 101 on Jan. 18 and Drop Spindle use on Feb. 15. Crocheting 101 was to be the subject of the Mar. 21 meeting. Joday Joseph coordinates the program, with Mikayla Covington and Judy and Risa Hanninen and others providing instruction.

Kara Swansiger played the role of Kitty in the play Charlie’s Aunt at the Crown Theater in Columbiana, Ohio.

The officers and groups within the congregation reported a profitable and successful 2019 at the annual congregational business meeting in late January.

As was the case with many congregations, Rose Point did not have any worship services for several weeks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anastasia (Annie) Brown wrote a mystery novel, Behind the Reflection, and entered it in the annual BookLogix Young Writers Contest. She received the top prize based on her originality, creativity, and writing skills. It is expected to be published before the end of the year.

Orlando, Fla., RPC

H.P. McCracken, pastor

The elders have discussed Orlando RPC’s 100th anniversary celebration, which they had tentatively planned for the month of November. They decided to postpone the actual celebration because of the COVID-19 virus. The church may still choose to mark the event in some less-public form of remembrance; however, a more public celebration will still be planned. Once that is cemented, a notice will be issued.

Meanwhile, the deacon board continues to display God’s grace by keeping busy with renovations and improvements around the church. Board member Steve Garrow is instrumental in producing works that are practical as well as aesthetically pleasing to the overall decor of the sanctuary.
